Security camera depth of field determines how much of a scene, from foreground to background, appears acceptably sharp. Focus should be set around the area where useful recorded detail matters most, then checked separately in daylight and darkness.
Wide-angle lenses lose useful edge detail because they spread a broad scene across the image sensor, often with added softness and distortion near the boundaries. Important subjects should pass near the frame centre. If one view must show the whole area, a separate camera may be needed for identification detail.
Choose optical zoom when the camera needs to capture closer detail through the lens. Use digital zoom as a viewing tool for enlarging detail already present in live or recorded images; it cannot recover detail that was never captured.
Plan camera cables on a separate, accessible route away from power equipment. Keep unavoidable crossings brief and perpendicular, use shielding only as part of a correctly terminated system, and test the completed link while nearby electrical loads are operating.
Choose a multi-sensor camera for coordinated wide coverage from one suitable position. Choose separate fixed cameras when the property needs distinct viewpoints, different lighting treatment, or views around corners and structural obstructions.
CCTV images flicker under indoor LED lighting when camera exposure captures rapid changes in light output from the LED driver. The result may appear as pulsing brightness or horizontal bands, particularly when exposure timing and the lighting cycle do not align.
Choose the frame rate around the movement you need to read, not the smoothest live picture. Then verify shutter speed, lighting, bitrate and recorded playback in the actual scene. A high frame rate cannot recover detail already blurred by a long exposure.
Set acceptance tests by defining observable pass criteria before installation, then testing every camera, alarm function, recording path, alert and backup feature under realistic conditions. Record each result, correct and retest failed items, and approve handover only when the property owner understands any remaining limitations and controls the system credentials.
Plan separate views for faces, vehicles and number plates whenever each target needs useful detail. Choose positions and framing around the real pedestrian and vehicle paths, then judge the result from recorded footage made under the actual daylight, darkness, headlights and gate lighting.
Choose constant bitrate when predictable network demand and archive planning matter most. Choose variable bitrate when the priority is allocating data efficiently as image complexity changes. In either case, test the setting with real daytime glare, movement and night conditions before finalising the recorder.
Choose fixed cameras for views that must remain continuously recorded. Add PTZ cameras only where movable observation or optical zoom supports a clear daily task, such as inspecting a garden, gate or open yard.
Choose a fixed lens when the required view is already clear and unlikely to change. Choose a varifocal lens when the security camera installer needs optical control over framing, viewing angle and subject detail after the camera has been mounted.
